Art and the Black Death
A certain Giotto (1266-1337) was the first artist in the 14th century to take advantage of the Black Death and began to create an new style, one that was more dramatic and realistic than normal. He received inspiration from nature and the nature at the time of his painting was morbid and filled with death, so that's what he painted. He began to introduce a better understanding of three dimensional shapes a skill that gave his works more realism. Giotto single handedly sparked an art movement in the 15th century.
Giotto, however, wasn't the only one changing his style of art, in fact many artists became increasingly morbid and a common theme of are moriendi occurred. Another renowned artist, Francisco Traini also painted realistically and based his works off of what was currently going on, just as Giotto did. Because of this one of Traini's works is named the Triumph of Death, which was an all too common theme during the 14th century, death that is, not the triumph of it.
