How They Came to Power
After being bombarded by a wave of barbarians from the northeast, the Romans had no choice, but to withdraw all troops from the far reaches of their territories to protect Rome. This meant that they withdrew troops from Britain at the beginning of the 5th century ; this evacuation occured under the Emperor Hadrian. This, in turn, allowed the Angles and the Saxons, Germanic tribes from Denmark and northern Germany, to freely conquer the island.
Anglo-Saxon England
Before the evacuation of Roman soldiers form England, the Angles and the Saxons had occationally plundered and raided, but they were now given the opportunity to make settlements and kingdoms, if they could first get past the Celtic Britons, who controlled large parts of England including Cornwall, Wales and Cumberland. At first they had troubles with theses Celts, but eventually they were able to create small kingdoms on the island, including Kent, a kingdom in the southeast. Eventually Christian missionaries were introduced to the island and the German invaders were converted to Christianity.
