Overview
One of the biggest name sin Renaissance music was Guillaume Dufay (c. 1400-1474). He is well known because he exemplified the change from more sacred music, which was used all the time, to more secular music which became the popular norm in the Renaissance. The biggest contribution Dufay made was that he made the base tune for masses secular instead of a sacred gregorian chant.
Soon, with the help of men like Dufay, the madrigal became the common and most popular type of secular music. It was simply a poem set to music, usually about 12 lines, written for about five or six voices and attempted to portray literal meaning to the text (Spielvogel).
