Southern Slavs
Though the Western Slavs were Roman Catholic Christians, the Southern Slavs took a different route, following Eastern Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire. There were two men, Cyril and Methodius, who made an alphabet for the Slavs and then translated the Bible into the new language. Many of the Southern Slavs accepted Christianity, but tension existed between the Croats and the Serbs because of their loyalty to different denominations.
The Bulgars came from Asia, and were now Southern Slavs, being part of the Slavic Bulgarian kingdom. It took a while for them to be converted because of the strife caused by denominations, but they eventually decided to go with Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Just like the Western Slavs were close with the Roman state, the Southern Slavs were close to the Byzantine state.
